Mandla district in the state of Madhya Pradesh was declared as India’s first fully ‘functionally literate’ district in 2016.
The declaration was made by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, during the inauguration of the National Adult Education Programme (NAEP) in New Delhi in September 2016. The achievement was a result of a long-term literacy campaign in the district, which aimed to provide functional literacy to all adults in the area.
The campaign was implemented through a range of activities, including door-to-door surveys, mobilization of community volunteers, and the use of innovative teaching methods such as the use of mobile phones and other technologies. The success of the campaign in Mandla district has since served as a model for similar efforts in other parts of India.
